The Butterfly Lovers starts with a girl coming from a reputable rich family, Zhu Yingtai who believes that a woman should have freedom to marry to someone she loves. Therefore, she takes the risk to help her brother’s ‘bride’ to run away on the wedding day. Avoid being betrothed, she then disguises herself as a young guy and confirms her parents to let her go to study. On the way to the school, she meets a young ‘book-worm’ guy, Liang Shanbo and has a good impression on him. Soon, they become good friends and even agree to each other to be sworn brothers. During their school days, both go through bad and good times together. Conflicts with their envious friends and unwise teacher just make their friendship and love grow deeper. Shanbo who never realises that Yingtai is a girl, later on knows the truth and happily accepts the fact that his love for his ‘brother’ is now turning to the one for a sweetheart. He hurriedly goes to Yingtai’s home to ask for a marriage proposal. However, he has to face difficulites with his love rival, Ma Wencai and Yingtai’s parents. Nothing can stop their being together as it is the fate to be a pair of soulmates…. when one dies the other does not want to live anymore!
Characters
He is a kind-hearted, sincere and caring soul. He is very protective to Yingtai and sincerely helps her in each problem she gets. He dares to take the challenge to help Yingtai. He is also helpful to his schoolmates including to the one who always wants to harm him – Ma Wencai. Shanbo holds the principle that being poor does not mean not having education. Thus, he is so diligent in his study and finds his talent in irrigation. His effort gives him a good result for finally he can become a government officer and raises his rank in the society.
She is a smart and brave girl. Disguising herself as a young man, she dares to take any risks to study among male students. She is very firm in her decision to love Shanbo whom her family will not like because of his social rank.
He is arrogant and selective in getting along with others because of his social status. Looking back at his sad childhood, he is actually pitiful. He has some traumatic moments of losing his mother and getting big pressure from his father. Feeling that Yingtai is suitable for him, he tries all his best to be with Yingtai. He uses any dirty tricks to reach his goal. He does not want to be defeated by Shanbo on whom he always looks down. Moreover, Yingtai’s continuous comparisons between he and Shanbo hurt his feelings deeper.
